Horrific Details of Soleiman’s Last Moments

Two days ago, The Toronto Star published a front page article detailing the final moments of Soleiman’s life titled “Jail Guard Tag Team Involved in Subduing Mentally Ill Inmate.

The article was full of disturbing details taken from documents released pursuant to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request made to the Kawartha Lakes Police Service (KLPS) by the Toronto Star. The KLPS initially denied FOI requests made the Faqiri family and The Toronto Star but relented late last week in the face of intense public scrutiny and a pending appeal by the Faqiri family’s lawyers before the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.

The Toronto Star Editorial Board also published an online opinion piece titled ‘Keep mentally ill out of prison segregation cells.’

“If [Soleiman’s] treatment sounds like something from the Dark Ages, that’s because it was. And despite warnings from ombudsman and human rights organizations, mentally ill prisoners are held in segregation to this day,” said the Editorial Board.

The last several days have been emotional as the Faqiri family discovered new details of how Soleiman was killed. Today Yusuf Faqiri, Soleiman’s eldest brother, has issued this statement:

“What we have discovered in the response from the FOI request has left our family speechless and in grief. My mother has not stopped crying since the news came out. My father wonders how this could happen in a government operated corrections centre. I have no explanation for my siblings. It has been two days and I still cannot process the appalling and horrid treatment that lasted for days before my brother was killed.

Our lawyers continue to express their ongoing concern about the police investigation to date and the lack of accountability for Soleiman’s death.

My family and our lawyers are committed to bringing the truth to light.

I continue to fight for justice for my brother Soleiman. No other family in Ontario should have to endure the loss of a loved one who is in government care awaiting medical assistance.

Our lawyers are preparing for the Coroner’s Inquest into Soleiman’s death which was called earlier this year.

The Justice For Soli Campaign started a launchgood initiative to raise money for the Faqiri family’s legal representation at the upcoming inquest. Our goal is to ensure that the truth is brought to light at the inquest into Soleiman’s death.

Our target is $50,000. After the Toronto Star article, a generous $10,000 donation was made anonymously.

Thank you to all for your continued support.
